“The Rack” Update

If you visit The Rack at Taggart Stadium in the winter or spring after school, or in the summer, as the sun is rising, you will see 50 to 60 focused, hard working kids all chasing the same dream.  Also, you will be in complete awe at the sight of the remarkable athletic complex; it’s any student-athlete’s dream to train in a facility as spectacular as The Rack.  The Rack is nearly 10,000 square feet with almost 9,000 feet of field turf; there’s also power racks, dumbbells, and the Canemaker.  Dreadful to some, “The Canemaker” is a 60 foot long overhead ladder which is just as challenging mentally as it is physically.  The newest edition to The Rack’s equipment and is now an essential part of the ‘Canes’ training regimend is the push-pull sleds from Rogue.  They specialize in lower body strength and give the athletes “a different type of strength and power” says head strength coach Pat Minenok.  But if you think “Coach Min”, as the players call him, is content with settling with where they’re at, you’re wrong.  This man eyes a groundbreaking dream, which is rapidly coming into the picture as a possibility and is a hot topic with the school board.  On the other side of the back wall of The Rack lies 11,000 more square feet, which is being occupied by only a few maintenance men, whom the administration is working on relocating for the sake of Minenok’s vision.  This dream is to knock down the wall and open up the facility even more, with 70 yards of field turf and batting cages for baseball and softball. The facility’s size will then allow two teams to train at once.  Minenok emphasizes how greatly this will benefit the football program in the offseason because The Rack will then provide enough space for the athletes to run full sprints indoors rather than outdoors in the bitter cold and heavy snow of a harsh northeastern winter, where it would be extremely difficult to make any progress.  Many administrative members are currently on board with the vision, and Minenok’s dream is coming closer to a reality.  Here in New Castle, the student athletes’ future is looking brighter and brighter as The Rack is evolving rapidly, and soon, it will possibly not only be the talk of the town, but of western Pennsylvania.
