The Christmas Truce a True Story of Peace

Nicholas Smiley, Author

The Christmas truce happened in 1914 during World War I. The Germans and British were fighting in Belgium on Christmas Eve. The adversaries soldiers had been fighting for two long cold winter months. The soldiers were not engaged in hand to hand combat much during this time because they were on opposite sides of “no man’s land”.  DuringWorld War I, large forces faced each other via trench warefare. There were German Trenches of one side and British on the other. In between the trenches were corpses, mud, and demolished tanks planes and rubble. There were snipers that watched over this land in case of a surprise attack or soldiers looking over their trench becoming an easy target.

On the morning of December 25 2014, Christmas Day a few German soldiers emerged from their trenches and started to sing Christmas Carols. The British saw this and instead of shooting them they called a seize fire to join them. Then word got around in the upper ranks and the commanding officers on both sides did not approve of these actions and made sure that it did not happen ever again. A lot of heroic actions happened that day and will always be remembered for this wonderful display of “Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men”
