Continued Effects of Covid

Corey Corbin and Tyler Savage

As the world slowly is getting back to normal, we are still feelings many effects of the Covid-19 saga.

Covid-19 has led to a loss of human life worldwide a challenge to public health, food systems, and the world of many employers. The economic and social disruption caused by the pandemic is devastating. Tens of millions of people are at risk of falling into poverty, while the number of undernourished people, is currently at an estimated nearly 690 million, and could increase up to 132 million by the end of the year.

Nearly half of the world’s 3.3 billion global workforces are at risk of losing their livelihoods. Informal economy workers are particularly vulnerable because the majority lack social protection and access to quality health care. Without the means to earn an income during lockdowns, many are STILL unable to feed themselves and their families.

For most, no income means no food. Also, preparations and precautions came at a great cost to the hospitals. Revenue shortfall due to federal government orders requiring hospitals to put off or cancel scheduled procedures for covid patients which intensified these burdens. During 2020, now carried over into 2021, and also carrying into 2022,  Pennsylvania hospitals incurred an estimated $5 million shortfall. Pennsylvania’s hospitals and health systems contributed $143 billion in spending including $37 billion in salaries and supported more than 660,000 jobs. Hospitals will need long-term federal and state support to ensure they can remain economic and health care leaders for their communities.

We hope that we can all recover one day from the effects of Covid-19. We understand times are still tough for many people worldwide. As we continue to receive updates about Covid-19 we will be sure to keep you all informed.
