2022’s Cinderella Story

2022s Cinderella Story

Dominic Cade and Jaden Kirkwood

The Saint Peters Peacocks is a team no one expected to even compete in March Madness, let alone make it out of the first round. The private Jesuit university out of New Jersey, with only a few thousand students and no star recruits, beat the number two seed in the NCAA’s Southeastern Conference. The Kentucky Wildcats were led by the number one ranked player in the nation, Oscar Tshiebwe, Kennedy-Catholic alumni. Our very own teacher Rick Mancino, here at New Castle High School, coached this prospect as well as five-star point guard Tyty Washington.

Saint Peters is led by #25 Doug Edert, an up-and-coming viral sensation that has given his team the boost it needed to succeed in the tournament. After upsetting Kentucky 85-79 on Thursday, March 17, St. Peters scored an unanswered six points in overtime, permitting them to move on to the second round. They then moved on to Murray St, the seventh-ranked team in the SEC, who they defeated by ten points in a score of 70-60 Saturday, March 19. This broke Murray St.’s 27 game win streak.

Saint Peters played Purdue Friday, March 25 at 7:09 p.m. Where they upset Purdue on National Peacock day! What a great way to move into the Elite 8 of the March Madness tournament.

Unfortunately, the clock struck midnight and their Cinderella story has come to an end, with a loss against number 8th seed North Carolina. What a great season The Peacocks had. This is why it is called March Madness people! We look forward to hearing more about this awesome school in the near future of college basketball.

Keep an eye on those brackets Canes! Final four is right around the corner!
