After peaking at the top of the National League and second overall in the MLB, the Pittsburgh Pirates have hit a rough patch. With a nearly completely new roster, the Pirates have brought in young talent and a few old friends to get back into the swing of things for the 2023 season. Some of these players include the 2013 NL MVP and former Pittsburgh Pirate Andrew McCutchen who may be 36 years old but is still bringing power and leadership to this Pittsburgh roster.

In the bullpen, 27-year-old Mitch Keller is beginning to own the mound. He recently threw 16 straight scoreless innings, with 21 strikeouts and one walk, which earned him the title of NL Player of the Week; the first Pirates pitcher since James Taillon in 2018. On the season Keller is 5-1, with a 2.38 ERA and 69 strikeouts, putting him in the 3rd rank in the NL. For some of the older fans of the sport, Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Rich Hill is still throwing the pepper. At the current age of 43 years, the league oldest, Hill currently sits at 3-3 with a 4.35 ERA.

Other new additions and stars include All-Star outfielder Bryan Reynolds, second baseman Ji-hwan Bae, and outfielder Jack “Captain Jack” Suwinski who has led the Pirates up until this point in the season.

Since losing the series to the league powerhouse Tampa Bay Rays, the Pirates have fallen to second in the NL Central division, with a record of 22-19, sitting one game behind the Milwaukee Brewers. As the season goes on, Pittsburgh and its fans are looking to come back from this down-point in the season, and hopefully make a push for the playoffs.
