Tips for Dealing with Difficult Customers (Senior Edition)
April 24, 2018
We have all had those days at work where the customers are just plain out rude and inconsiderate. Given the stress you think about just quitting your job right on the spot. However, sometimes it isn’t just as easy as that due to financial reasons to keep your job. Therefore, here are some tips to help to deal with those difficult situations and not so friendly customers.
1.) Be Kind: Even if the customer is being rude and inconsiderate when you are doing all you can, still continue to be kind and generous because they may have something going on that you are not aware of. Just that little bit of kindness might help to brighten their day.
2.) Listen: Pay attention to what they are asking for and what their needs are. Your main focus is to make sure they are getting what they ask for and are satisfied in the end.
3.) Keep Calm: Although sometimes you just want to scream, just take a deep breath and continue going. Eventually, the customer will leave and it will be over with. It is better to just agree with the customer and say okay than to flip out and be rude back.
4.) Communicate: Be honest as to what you can do for them and what you cannot. Explain to them if there is a problem rather than hiding it from them. Some customers may not be understanding, but it is your job as an employee to try the best of your ability to communicate clearly to them.
5.) Don’t Take it Personal: Most of the time when a customer is being mean, it has nothing to do with you as a person or your working abilities. Therefore, don’t take it too personal if they make rude comments to you. More times than not, their actions are because of something that happened before they started talking to you or an underlying reason no one is aware of.
Indeed, dealing with difficult customers can be challenging and draining, especially if you are someone who is just recently going into the work force. These tips will help to relieve some of the stress and anxiety that comes along with these difficult customers. Always remember that eventually the day will be over and the customer will leave.
