New Castle School District brought home a record number 17 State Winning Awards from the 85th annual Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science State Science Fair at Pennsylvania State University, May 20-22, 2018.

2900 students representing over 620 public, private, and charter schools across the state of Pennsylvania presented their scientific research to a panel of judges including PSU professors and graduate students.

Each student designed and completed their own unique science project based on the scientific method, and prepared a power point presentation and evaluated by a panel of judges including PSU professors and graduate students.

To qualify for the state competition, each student received a first-place award at the regional competition at Slippery Rock University in February. New Castle results:

Seventh Grade — First place: Hailey Gonzales
Eighth Grade- First place: Taylor Anderson, Olivia Pierce
Second place: Ava Carmichael, Aodhan McMichael, Riley Powers, Sarah Travis, Jonalyn Wharry
Ninth Grade– First place: Alexis Bethle, Aiden Druschel, Pasquale Fiello, Rachel Fuller, Olivia
Goodlin, Peyton Green, Alison Lloyd, Zoey Ondako, Gabriel Perrotta, Rachel Zona.
Second place: Luke Bongivengo, Abby Bryson, Donald Cade, Kiera Cartwright, CJ Donston,
Travis Emery, Logan Gibson, Zac Gibson, Gavin Joyce, Amarah Lee, Lazaro Lopez, Eddie Lutton,
McKenzie Powers, Nina Reider
