I have  recently had the pleasure of interviewing Paul Stefano, one of our New Castle High School, history teachers. He was my Law teacher my freshman year, and I enjoyed his personality as a teacher so much, I knew I wanted to write about him and ask him questions on what it’s like being a teacher. Here’s how it went!

Q. How long have you been teaching?

“I’ve been teaching for 19 years, I can’t believe how fast it goes by.”

Q. When do you want to retire?

“our retirement is normally at 35 years, so I guess in about 16 years.”

Q. What are some weaknesses you face as a teacher?

“I get off  track a lot, talking about social studies stuff, which takes away class time. I can also be too kind sometimes, and let kids off easy.”

Q. Do you make learning enjoyable for your students?

“I try, but sometimes it’s nearly impossible to get teenagers to be interested in social studies.”

Q. What is your discipline philosophy?

“I try to have a professional and calm environment with clear expectations for my students.”

Q. How do you calm an angry parent?

“I approach the situation respectfully. I provide facts, but more importantly, I try to have open communication, such as sending a letter home, going to open house so they know me, and being fair.”

Q. What is your least favorite grade to teach?

“I have only taught a handful of classes, from 7th, 8th and 9th. However, I wouldn’t want to teach seniors. Being a senior, you have a lot going on in one school year, they’re very busy, and I would hate to be the one to fail a senior.”

Q. What is your favorite grade to teach?

“Like I said, I’m only really familiar with teaching 9th grade. I’d be more interested in teaching another subject, rather another grade.”

Q. Describe the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a teacher.

“The biggest challenge is trying to make the subject interesting to teenagers. Some lessons just aren’t captivating, but you still need to try.”
