Did Howie Roseman Fail in the 2021 NFL Draft?
May 26, 2021
A Couple Days Prior to the 2021 NFL Draft
For the past 2 or 3 years General Manager for the Philadelphia Eagles Howie Roseman has done a very poor job in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 NFL Draft. Will he redeem himself in the 2021 NFL Draft? If he does not, most likely he will no longer be the GM of the Eagles.
The Eagles finished the season at 4-11-1 and secured the 1st round pick 6 overall. During the off-season, they traded down to get the 12th overall pick in the draft to get another 1st round pick for next year’s draft. They needed help at wide receiver, which is the position they wanted most to be drafted in the 1st round. At pick 12 they could get lucky if a receiver drops that far or they could miss out.
Draft Day
The 2021 draft day has arrived, and the Eagles still sit at pick 12 in the 1st round. The Eagles miss out on Jamar Chase, Jalen Waddle, Patrick Surtain, Jaycee Horn, and Kyle Pitts, all going early in the draft. The Eagles, still sitting at pick 12, notice that the Heisman winning wide receiver was still on the board, but the only way to get him was trading in front of the Giants and the Cowboys. If they could make a trade to get the Heisman Winner Devonta Smith, it would be shocking, but it did not look like they were moving up. However, shortly after the Broncos drafted Surtain, the Eagles were on the phone with the Dallas Cowboys, who had pick 10 in the draft. If they made this trade to get in front of Dallas and New York, it would shock the world.
As it gets closer to the Cowboys time running out, the Eagles made a trade and are now on the clock. The Eagles have selected the Heisman Winner Devonta Smith from Alabama. The Eagles made a splash in the 1st round, which Eagles fans would have thought they would never see happen in a million years. This was just the beginning to a pretty good draft by Howie Roseman and the Eagles.
As the Eagles picks would occur, they went with the best possible player they could get in each round of their draft picks. It’s looking very good for the Eagles to become contenders for the NFC East again, especially if they can make another splash in the 2021 free agency/off-season. They will be leaning on 2nd year quarterback Jalen Hurts, and if he does poorly, it will be okay because the Eagles have 3 1st round picks for next year’s draft, the ultimate insurance for a team.
The Eagles will be fun to watch this season, as now they are way younger than what they once were and will continue to get younger, talented players to fill the gaps in their roster. So the question that all Eagles fans wanted to know: if Howie Roseman failed in the 2021 draft, and the answer to that question is, no he did not; he drafted pretty well to set the team up for success.
