Does Pop-Culture Deserve Serious Study?
May 10, 2022
Pop culture is something that everyone has become familiar with over the years. Pop culture is those types of media that have mass accessibility and appeal to the public. Whether it’s a social media like TikTok or just a random web series. These can all be classified as pop culture. But it’s definitely a lot more than that. The general age of pop culture seems to be about 12-40 give or take. While it may seem harmless to the average 12-year-old, sometimes it can be pretty mind-boggling. Pop culture definitely affects society as a whole. It informs how people make sense of the world. It reveals what society believes about itself, but also for affecting social change.
One example of social change would be Americans willing to vote for a woman for president. Barely half of Americans in 1969 said they would support their party’s nominee for a “generally well-qualified person for president” if that nominee were a woman, although that was itself an improvement from 33% in 1937. Today, Americans’ expressed willingness to support a woman for president is nearly universal, at 94%. Another part of pop culture is how it affects early life or your childhood and teenage years. Children are getting exposed to things like violence, drugs, and more. Children and teenagers all over the world are watching or listening to different things that reflect improper behavior. Teenagers are the ones most affected. It affects them cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally. Shows that are shown on Netflix, HBO Max, and more play a huge role in influencing teenagers today. This causes many parents to worry about if it’s okay for their children to have electronic devices and such. Some parents like to protect their child’s innocence longer than others. But, pop culture can also influence kids in a good way.
By providing them with an outlet for them to express themselves freely. This isn’t everything about pop culture, and there is so much more out there. For instance, entertainment, news, slang, fashion, and so much more. Studying pop culture will let us explore philosophical and moral questions, as well as the functioning of society on a smaller scale. Without pop culture, we wouldn’t be able to understand generations, so knowing gives us all a better understanding. Things have evolved majorly over the years for sure. Studying them can give us a better understanding of why these things were changed. Maybe someone changed the way we greet each other because it sounded nicer or it was faster than saying a full greeting, or how we dress now compared to 100 years ago. So many people ask why these things change, and with proper study, we can understand why there is change and how it is affecting everyone in the world.
