Steeler’s Upcoming 2022-2023 Season: What Should Be Expected

Dominic Cade, Senior Editor

The 2022 NFL season is, literally, right around the corner, and here is how the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking.

As we all know, the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh has gotten extremely competitive. With the off-season acquisition of Mitchel Trubisky from the Buffalo Bills along with the recent first-round selection of Kenny Pickett out of Pittsburgh University back in April, it was an unforeseeable decision that was left to Coach Mike Tomlin. On the bright side of this nerve-wracking determination that would have a major impact on the Steeler’s upcoming season, Coach Tomlin came to a conclusion Monday night that the rookie would not get the start. A choice that varies amongst the fans on if it will be successful or not, only time will tell for the previous NVP (Nickelodeon’s most valuable player).

While talking about the offense, the second-year star running-back out of Alabama, Najee Harris, will look to have less of a work-load this upcoming season but to still have a major impact on the Steeler’s rushing game. Trubisky will incorporate a new arm that has not really been there in recent years, that being of former retired quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, also known as “Big Ben.” He will look to returning wide receivers Dionte Johnson, who had a 1,000-yard season last year, Chase Claypool, and the new rookie from Georgia, George Pickens, the Steeler’s second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. While the offensive line may be the weak point of this offense, there is still some young promise for Steel city on the defensive side.

After the new offseason acquisition of Miles Jack as well as former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores, the Steelers attempt to replace the loss of veteran Stephon Tuitt who retired this offseason. Returning Defensive Player of the Year TJ Watt and Minkah Fitzpatrick will aim to carry the Steelers on their defensive possessions. Veteran Cam Heyward will also lead as captain of the team as well.

The Steelers are projected in the bottom half of the league rankings and to have a losing record of 7-10, which would be the first time Coach Tomlin would have a losing record across his entire NFL coaching career. Pittsburgh will face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in week 1, the man who has, as much as many hate to say it, basically owned the NFL throughout his career.

In the end, it all comes down to how much these players want to win. The talent is there as well as the coaching to help them improve, but only the upcoming season will tell.
