Is Kenny Pickett the Answer?

Josh Hoerner, Sports Editor

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2 and 5.  The Steelers have not had a losing season since Mike Tomlin has taken over as head coach.  However, that streak may come to an end this year.

The latest Steeler loss came as the defense let up 16 points in the first half, and zero in the second.  The defense has not been the issue.

Moreover, Steeler’s rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett threw 3 interceptions.  That is his 7th in 3 games as a starter.  He has only thrown 2 touchdown passes.

However, a lot of Pickett’s interceptions were not his fault.  Many have come as miscommunications, which is expected as a rookie quarterback.

This offense has serious playmakers on the field.  Diontae Johnson is one of the best route runners in the NFL.  Najee Harris is a former first-round pick who looks dangerous in space with the ball in his hand.  Chase Claypool has a very rare combination of size and speed.  George Pickens is a promising outside receiver.

This team and offense have potential. So if it isn’t the QB’s fault, or the playmaker’s fault, whose fault is it?

We want to say the answer is: offensive coordinator Matt Canada.  The offense hasn’t scored over 20 points this season.  The running game has looked stale. He isn’t playing to any of the skill positions’ strengths.  He doesn’t utilize enough motion in his offense.

Canada was a great college coordinator at Pitt. However, his struggles in the NFL are evident. If the Steeler’s offense is to improve, step one may be firing Matt Canada.

Let us know your thoughts Canes.
