Interview with The Sheriff of Lawrence County, Perry Quahliero

Angelina Quahliero, Feature Editors

This interview is probably the easiest and most relaxed interview I’ve ever conducted. That’s because I had the pleasure of  interviewing the Sheriff of Lawrence County who just happens to be my dad, Perry Quahliero!!!

AQ: When did you decide you wanted to be in law enforcement?

PQ: I was working in the steel mill and then I went back into managing at a grocery store. Then I applied and got hired in the sheriff’s office.

AQ: What year did you get elected Sheriff of Lawrence County?

PQ: I won the election in 2005. It was an honor and a privilege to be elected.

AQ: What are the good and bad parts of being in law enforcement?

PQ: It is a very demanding job. But if I am able to help people along the line with their troubles then I’ll know I’ve done my job. I have a job to do and I’m ordered by the court to do certain things by law.

AQ: What would you say to someone who doesn’t respect police officers?

PQ: Try to reason with them by saying we have a job to do and we are here to keep the community safe. You shouldn’t look down to police officers or say anything bad about them because one day you might need them to help you out. It’s our job, we took an oath to serve and protect the community.

AQ: What would you say to somebody if they wanted to go into law enforcement?

PQ: I’d give them encouragement. Like I said it’s a demanding and dangerous job. You never know what could happen. You really got to put your time into it and always got to remember that there will be people that don’t like you. You are putting your life on the line for others. And most importantly to never abuse your power. We are here for a purpose, to protect others. Be trustworthy and professional.

PQ: I also want to add that the badge doesn’t make you any different than anybody else! You still got to obey the law as you want somebody else to obey the law.

Thank you so much for everything you do dad. I know there are many people who respect what you do. So grateful to have you to look up to.-Angelina
