Logan Gibson: The Life of a Woodsman

Logan Gibson: The Life of a Woodsman

George Joseph, Feature Writer

Logan Gibson is a junior at New Castle Senior High School.  I have known Logan for many years, and one thing I have noticed is his love of hunting.  I have received the opportunity to interview Logan on his passion and love of hunting.  I hope you enjoy the interview-George

Question: What made you become a hunter?

Logan: My “pops” always went hunting, and I loved all the food he brought home from his harvest, so I decided to become a hunter, and join him.

Question: How old were you when you harvested your first animal?

Logan: I was twelve years young when I harvested my first doe, which was Sharon.

Question: What drives you to hunt every season, even after a failure?

Logan: Tradition, hanging with my “Pops”, and the gift of food I receive from the animal.

Question: Who do you usually hunt with?

Logan: Well, sometimes I like to go crazy and hunt with Mr. Levi Curry, but usually I go with my dad.

Question: What is your favorite hunting story?

Logan: My favorite hunting story was the time that I was in Plain Grove with my Dad and I harvested my first deer.  We did not see a deer all season until that day.  We were standing on the railroad tracks talking loudly and watching youtube videos because he thought that the hunt was going to be over and a whole herd of deer approached us.  It was very ironic because when we were quite we did not see a deer but when we were loud we saw one.

Question: What do you enjoy the most about the outdoors?

Logan: It gives me a place to relax, while doing something I love.

Question: Why is hunting on the decline in PA?

Logan: Hunting is on the decline in PA because years ago the season was changed.  When the date of the season changed, many deer were wiped out, which made the deer population go down a lot.  This caused hunters to go out in the woods and not see many deer, which made them not want to hunt anymore and not teach young hunters how to hunt.

Question: What would you do to get people to hunt more?

Logan: I would start off by making people go turkey hunting because it is the most action-packed season and it is in the warm weather.

Question: What is your most favorite prize you have ever harvested?

Logan: If I had to say so it would be my coyote, I was deer hunting one day and I stumbled across it. I fired my weapon and I thought that I shot someone’s dog, next thing I know I got my first coyote.

Question: Last but not least, why do you think hunting is a good thing?

Logan: In my perspective hunting is a great thing because it keeps the population of various animals in check and it provides me a way to spend quality time with my pops and getting food to eat.

We wish Logan the best of luck, in hunting, and in all of his future endeavors.
