A Conversation with Athletic Director Sam Flora Senior Edition Preview!!

I have had the opportunity to interview the Athletic Director Sam Flora. The New Castle High athletic director has worked at the high school for 39 years. His time served and accomplishments landed him a spot in the 2017 Lawrence County Historical Society Sports Hall of Fame class. Mr Flora had an amazing career in football and track, earning him six varsity letter. He was even part of the Legendary 1967 New Castle football team that went 11-0. Despite the success on the field, his greatest sucess is helping kids reach their goal off the field or court. There is not another kind like Mr.Flora, He is a wonderful person to be around and loves to bleed the red and black.

Q: “Given the long legacy of the Flora family in New Castle athletics, what do you believe is the greatest lesson a student athlete can learn?”

“Do the best you can do and that’s all you can ask”

Q: “Tell me about yourself.”

“I have been affiliated with New Castle athletics since 1981, a trainer for 18 years and Athletic Director for 21 years. I have also worked for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for 30 years.”

Q: “What do you believe is the primary role of the athletic director?”

“Make sure student athletes are taking care of. You can give them good advice of academics or athletic accomplishments”

Q: “What do you find most rewarding about being an athletic director?”

“To see the kids excel in classroom and graduating to do something they love”

Q: “How do you define ‘”success” in athletics?”

“You are in high eliminated amount of time. Work hard, move on, and get a great career”

Q: “As the athletic director, how do you set the tone for athletics in the city of New Castle?”

“By making them be respectful”

“As the athletic director, what do you look for in a coach?”

“Coaches that stick by the rule and coaching staff on the same place”

Q: “What is your favorite place to eat in New Castle?”

“There is a lot of good places, but it is Nahlas.”
