The Eye of the Hurricane wanted to highlight teachers on the junior high side of our building who have made an lasting impression on them.    Furthermore, this influence has assisted students successfully transition to high school.  Our first teacher featured, is Mrs. Buckel who teaches English at  New Castle Junior High School.

Q 1: When did you decide to become a teacher?

A: Second grade, because my mother was my role model.

Q 2: How long have you been teaching English for?

A: 14 years.

Q 3: How do you help students experience success?

A: To help students achieve success on their own.

Q 4: How do you keep students interested in your lessons?

A: I try to relate it to their life. I try to bring their stories to life.

Q 5: How would you discipline your students?

A: I would settle corrections quietly and try not to embarrass them. I would not give them detentions.

Q 6: Explain the reasons why you would contact parents.

A: I would positively bring things up, and then talk about the negatives.

Q 7: How do you collaborate with other teachers?

A: Share lessons with the other teachers when possible.

Q 8: Describe the management strategies and techniques you use to maintain an effective classroom environment.

A: Consistency, awareness of expectations, ability to help, willingness to offer assistance, and more.

Q 9: What do you consider to be a major issue in public education today?

A: Standardized Testing is a traditional issue in public schools. So much learning and teaching occurs everyday, it is difficult to validly asses the students’ progress.
