NFL Blockbusters and Busts: Teams that Did / Did not live up to their Hype

Brady Cwynar, Junior Editor

After half the season of the 2020-2021 NFL Regular Season games being complete, there is a lot of teams that shocked me and many others around the world on how underwhelmingly bad/surprisingly good they are doing thus far. (Article includes information based on only up to week 8)

1. New England Patriots (Bust)

If you asked me or any football fan, “What would be the Patriots record half way to the conclusion of the Regular Season?” I could bet you not a single person would predict the team being under .500 for the first time in 18 years! The Patriots with Cam Newton & Co. have probably been the most disappointing Patriots team in about 2 decades for anyone who’s a fan. The Patriots without Tom Brady is NOT a good team, and Cam Newton is lacking to perform up to the standards Tom Brady set for any QB to come in the future of the Patriots Franchise.

2. Pittsburgh Steelers (Blockbuster)

Wow! This is one of the best Steelers team as a whole. The D line is the Steelers’ biggest advantage when walking into any game. When it comes to Ben, he looks just as good as any year, but nothing special. People like Chase Claypool is what keeps the team’s energy consistent, and pushes them to keep expanding in the win column.

3. New York Jets (Bust)

No words can explain this team. They honestly just suck at football.

4. Seattle Seahawks (Blockbuster)

Russell Wilson is just a different type of beast. Arguably, the man everyone wants for MVP belongs to the Seattle Seahawks. Through week 8 Wilson has a 120.8 QB rating with 26 TD’s and only 6 INT’s. HOLD UP, don’t forget they also have Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf which in my opinion are the BEST performing wide receivers in the league. It would not surprise me if this is the team that takes the ring in 2021.

5. Philadelphia Eagles (Bust)

This is far from the team that won the Super Bowl. As a whole it’s no surprise since it’s 2020 that we would have a weird under .500 race for first place in the NFC East. The Eagles are sadly in contention for first place, but far from out the water. The Washington Football Team, and the New York Giants still have great opportunities lined out for them. With a quarterback that struggles a ton against the low lights of the NFL. No surprise if the Eagles make the playoffs and go one and out. No NFC East team has what it takes to go anywhere in this 2020 season.

6. Dallas Cowboys (Bust)

Just like the Eagles, a team that should be over .500 and fighting for first place, isn’t. Mid season the Cowboys were put in a sticky situation when Dak Prescott got injured which led to them having to start a 7th round quarterback, Ben DiNucci, when still in the NFC East race. A team that in my opinion had the best opportunity this season in the division, went to the team with the lowest chance of going anywhere. It’s sad the circumstances this team was put in but in the near future and healthy, the Cowboys will be back.

6. Kansas City Chiefs (Blockbuster)

Patrick Mahomes is definitely the top contender for MVP this season. Getting two consecutive rings is up to the Chiefs and consistently winning even though they make it seem effortless, once they make it to the playoffs there will be plenty of top Super Bowl contenders they will have to knock down.

7. Denver Broncos (Bust)

Fans were very excited heading from the 2019-2020 season to the 2020-2021 season based off the 4-1 performance their QB Drew Lock had. Unfortunately, things went south when a Top 10 WR Courtland Sutton and in my opinion the overall best standing LB, Von Miller, were deeemed out for the majority of the season/whole season. Players like these two make a whole difference on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. With the O Line also facing tragedy, it’s no surprise that a team that looked like a contender for the AFC Wildcard… currently looks very far from it. Also, Drew Lock the young QB  is not to be blamed.. especially when he is getting too banged up. When this team gets healthy again, I have no doubts especially with the amount of talent the team has, they will be looking as if the world turned around.
