The Little Mermaid–Stage Crew

The+Little+Mermaid--Stage+Crew

Shelby Norris, Author

Just as much as we love to see the headliners and lead performers in this year’s musical The Little Mermaid, it is always important to see who is behind the scenes, putting everything together and making sure the sets move smoothly from one scene to the next. We present to you our wonderful stage crew for this year’s musical. I had the honor of interviewing the behind-the-scenes crew. We hope you enjoy the interview!

Jordan Byers

Q-How long have you been part of the stage crew?
Mr.D– This is my second year working with the stage crew.
Michael-This my 3rd year of the stage crew
Rivett-a year
Kymee-this is my first year on stage crew
Isabelle-Since this year
Evangeline-I’ve been a part of the stage crew for just the last two years.
Jordan 2 years
Justin This will be my 2nd year on stage crew.
Q-How is the stage crew going so far?
Mr.D– It’s going well, and progressing nicely.
Michael– The stage crew is doing well but not doing much right now
Rivett-it’s cool, I like it 😀
Kymee-its really cool so far
Isabelle-Fine
Evangeline- Stage crew is going pretty well so far, we haven’t been doing as much but we’re about to get staging done and then we’ll have a lot more work to do. We also have a lot to do closer to the show when we get the backdrops, start using the main curtain, and start making and sorting props.
Jordan It’s going well so far. We are just waiting for our props to be built and the backdrops to arrive.
Justin Stage crew is always a mess until show night since props are constantly being added every day and the backdrops are rented so we don’t even have them till the week before the show. Once they are added, the way we move props changes completely since we now have backdrops hanging from the ceiling. I feel like this year will be slightly easier because Mr. D is our stage manager instead of stage crew seniors being the manager but that is a story for another time.
Q-What is your favorite part about the stage crew?
Mr.D-My favorite part is working with the cast and watching the musical slowly come to fruition, after all the hard work.
Michael-My favorite part is just working with electronics and on stage.
Rivett-lifting stuff is fun
Kymee-my favorite part would probably just be getting to help where I can
Isabelle-The experience
Evangeline-When it comes to stage crew, I really love getting to help people. It’s nice to be able to see so many talented people playing their characters and knowing that I helped them be able to do that. I also really love getting to interact with everyone. The musical is a really supportive team and even when there are disagreements I still know that we all support each other, which is comforting.
Jordan Getting to help everyone.
Justin Not having to dance with my 2 left feet. Lol. Personally, I just don’t really like singing or dancing but I feel like I could be an actor for a movie or TV show but it’s not my number one dream.
Q-What are some traditions you have?
Mr.D-It’s a little early to choose traditions, as this is only my second year with the cast.
Michael-We don’t really have any traditions that aren’t with the whole musical cast.
Rivett-none.
Kymee-I don’t really have any traditions
Isabelle-None yet
Evangeline-Most of our traditions is the same ones that are shared with the cast, like the cast and crew dinner. But, there are also multiple traditions that are based around the seniors for that year, like getting to walk on the catwalk before you graduate and speeches at the cast party at the end of the show.
Jordan I don’t have any traditions personally, I just go with the flow and participate in the cast traditions as they come up.
Justin As stage crew, we don’t really have any but I know we have a few cast traditions that I take part in like Applebees after opening night and others I don’t really remember. I’ve only been here for a year though.

Thank you Stage Crew! Hope to see you at the show—March 30th, 31st, and April 1st!
