Hollywood Writer’s Strike

Hollywood Writers Strike

Alexa Perrotta, Author

The Writers Guild of America (WGA), began their strike on May 2nd, 2023. They started this strike due to disagreements with the US entertainment industry.

One of the disagreements includes the WGA wanting to ban the use of AIs similar to ChatGPT. Writers began fearing that these technologies undermined writers’ compensation and writing credits.

Writers also fear that their job security and pay are unstable with the use of AI. Many believe it undermines the writing profession entirely.

Major late-night shows were already affected as they are typically written the day the episode airs. Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show and Late Night with Seth Myers went off the air as soon as the strike began.

The strike even halted the 48th season of Saturday Night Live. NBC network announced they would be airing reruns of the fan-favorite show until further notice.

Unfortunately, the strike stopped adored shows like Breaking Bad, Grey’s Anatomy, and Stranger Things from airing episodes consistently throughout the season.

Other entertainment networks like Disney, Warner Bros, Fox, Netflix, and Universal have all been affected by the strike. At the moment, there is no actual end date in sight for the writer’s strike.
