King Charles III Coronation

Alexa Perrotta, Author

King Charles III was crowned King of Britain on May 6th, 2023. His wife, Camilla was also crowned Queen that same day.

The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey in London. At 74 years old, King Charles III embarked on the eighth-century ritual. He was anointed with holy oil, vested with an imperial mantle, and crowned with the ancient crown of Saint Edward.

The coronation then proceeded through London with the ceremony held at Westminster Abbey. The coronation was a three-day holiday in Britain.

King Charles III’s coronation opened a new role for women. Over the centuries, England has crowned several female monarchs, but until this coronation, a woman had never carried the 17th-century Sword of State into Westminster Abbey. During the two-hour-long service, Penny Mordaunt, leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council, carried the eight-pound four-foot sword.

King Charles’s coronation was not only a spectacle for those in Britain, but America too. Over ten million Americans watched the coronation from their homes.

What a great day!
