Why is Sunscreen Important?

Alexa Perrotta, Author

In the hot summer sun, protecting your skin is extremely important. If you are going to be enjoying a nice pool day, relaxing on the beach, or participating in other summer activities, be sure to wear sunscreen!

Sunscreen not only prevents sunburn, which can be extremely painful but also protect your skin from various skin conditions. Sunscreen helps to prevent skin cancer and premature aging.

The SPF in sunscreen protects the skin from a particular UV light called UVB. This specific UV light is a known carcinogen for skin cancer.

It is important to apply sunscreen to the parts of your body that are exposed to the sun the most. This includes the face, neck, arms, and legs. Hopkins Medicine recommends using about half of a teaspoon for your neck and face.

On the days that you are outside for long periods of time make sure that you remember to reapply your sunscreen. Sunscreen should be reapplied generally every two hours.

Have a safe and fun summer!
