The 90th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place on Sunday, March 4th, 2018. The Oscars are one of the most prestigious award shows due to the awards being given by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy is the film industry’s professional honorary organization. The first Oscars ceremony was held on May 16th, 1929, and has been held annually for the last eight decades. The first award ceremony was at a dinner party with only about 250 guests. 1929 was also around the time that silent movies evolved into “talkies,” which was pioneered by the Warner brothers. This movie titled The Jazz Singer was not eligible for Best Picture, though, due to the Academy not thinking it was fair since no other movies had sound.
