After a long, exhausting day of school, rehearsals, homework, and many other necessary tasks, you are ready to throw in the towel and go to bed. However, you cannot just relax! Instead, you have 5 essays to write, 3 exams for which to study, 4 books to read, hours of dance rehearsal, and dance competition and work this weekend! You realize that your chronic case of senioritis must be treated, yet you begin to wonder when all of the chaos will end so you can finally stop stressing and relax. You ask yourself, “Is it even healthy to be under this much stress?” As it turns out, the answer is no; it actually is not healthy to be under an abundance of stress because it will take a huge toll on both physical and mental well being.

Stress attacks the human body on a multitude of levels.  The most commonly affected aspects of our being are our physical condition, moods, and behavior. Prolonged stress is known to contribute to long term cardiovascular deficiencies, which begins with insomnia and excruciating chest pain. Such deficits are caused by a consistent and ongoing increase in heart rate, regular flow of stress hormones, and elevated blood pressure. The mood is a key factor in what affects the outcome of any day for almost all people. In regards to mood, stress can deplete one of his motivation, cause him to become anxious or restless at all times, or even succumb to depression. To sum it all up, prolonged stress takes a massive toll on behavior. At this, one is more likely to become susceptible to substance use such as drugs and/or alcohol as he has chosen to turn to such substances to cope with egregious stress. One may become withdrawn from society, abandon physical activity, or spontaneously lash out on others as a means to release his abundant stress. Furthermore, people who are stressed share a common goal of releasing their stress.

On the bright side, there is a multitude of healthy and productive means that one can take to release his stress. Perhaps most of all, regular physical activity provides an outlet for excess energy while stimulating positive thoughts to boost self-esteem. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and deep breathing are key to maintain peace and composure in stressful times. Socializing with family and friends and allowing time for hobbies outside of key tasks both allow one to maintain happiness through overwhelming times.  Though stress is one of the inescapable obstacles that we must overcome in life, we must be aware that too much stress is not good for our health and that there are many beneficial steps to take to cope with stress effectively.
