Senior Drum Major, Caeley Hovanec, has had a passion for music since she started playing the trumpet in seventh grade. A drum major’s job is to lead the band, instruct them to play which songs, and set their tempos, which Caeley takes seriously. This talented musician has been involved outside of the classroom as well. She said, “Besides concert, jazz, pep, and marching band, I’ve done PMEA, Red Coat band, and I play trumpet, guitar, and sing on my church worship team.” I was given the opportunity to talk to Caeley about her experiences with music both in and out of the classroom.

What is your favorite part of being drum major?
The best part is the opportunity to experience what it’s like to run a band.

Who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your band career?
Biggest inspiration would be Mr. Yoho and Mr. Onufrak. They’ve helped me grow and develop as a musician.

What is a problem you faced as drum major that you had to overcome?
A problem I faced but solved was confidence. I was afraid to do anything in front of people, but this position sort of forced me out of my “bubble.”

What are your current goals after high school?
Oh I plan on going to college for music education to be a band director.

Any schools in particular you have looked into?
Anywhere with a good music program. I’m looking at Messiah, YSU, SRU, Evangel University, Akron, and Kent.

What advice do you have for younger band students?
Advice for younger band kids would be to work hard and make friends because high school moves fast.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to Caeley for helping me with this interview. I have had a wonderful experience spending this marching band season with you.
