On Saturday, February 23rd, the New Castle Sr. High Wrestling Team officially entered the post-season as they took on the AAA Section Four Tournament. The top 5 players in this tournament would be invited to attend the WPIAL tournament on Friday, March 1st. The wrestling team brought eight wrestlers to this tournament and of those eight, Four placed. Dante Mangieri placed 5th in the 120lb class, Gavin Joyce placed 5th in the 152lb class, Jonah Miller placed 3rd in the 132lb class, and Micah Killion placed 2nd in the 220lb class. All of these wrestlers will advance to the WPIAL tournament on March 1st.

Dante Mangieri began the tournament with a loss to Chartiers Valley by major decision (5-1), but came back with a win against West Allegheny by major decision (10-4). Dante was faced with another loss in the bout to get into the 3rd and 4th place bout with a 14-4 loss against Moon. However, Dante secured the 5th place spot with a pin against Canon Mcmillan.

Gavin Joyce ’ s tournament went exactly the same as Dante ’ s. He began with a loss to Ambridge by pinfall, then came back with a win over Chartiers Valley (8-0). Next Gavin took a loss against Canon Mcmillan by pinfall, but he bounced back and beat Moon ’ s 152lb wrestler 5-2.

Jonah Miller began his day with a 6-5 win over South Fayette. Then, he unfortunately lost to Trinity ’ s 132lb wrestler. Jonah went on to win his last two matches, 1-0 against Montour, and 2-0 against Canon Mcmillan, to secure himself a 3rd place spot at the tournament.

Micah Killion won 2 of his first matches against Chartiers Valley with a 10-4 major decision, and Moon 8-4 with a major decision, and finished with an unfortunate loss against Waynesburg. That was enough for Micah to secure a 2nd place spot for the day.

The Hurricane wrestlers are now taking on the WPIAL tournament. Lets wish them good luck, go canes!
