Pittsburgh Pirates Off-Season So Far

The Pirates haven’t been throwing around money all off-season.  However, they haven’t been afraid to make moves.

The first move the Pirates made was dealing for Ray’s first basemen Ji-Man Choi.  Ji-Man is a switch-hitting first baseman, who slashed .233 and hit 11 homers last year.  Ji-Man’s best year was with the Rays in 2019, where he slashed .269 and hit 19 homers.  The Pirates only gave up cash considerations for the first basemen.

Then, the Pirates added Designated hitter Carlos Santana.  Santana slashed .206 last year and hit 19 homers between the Mariners and the Royals.  The former Guardian has had 2 seasons in which he hit over 30 homers.  The 36-year-old signed a one-year 6 and a half million dollar contract.

The final transaction the Pirates made was dealing shortstop Kevin Newman to the division rival Reds.  Newman hit .274 last year, with 2 homers.  This move clears the way for O’Neil Cruz to be the everyday shortstop.

The Pirates did make a few transactions this offseason.  However, this hasn’t been the only news to come from the organization.

The Pirates won the first-ever MLB Draft Lottery.  They now own the first draft pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Center Fielder Bryan Reynolds has asked for a trade.  The 2021 All-Star slashed .269 and hit 27 homers last year.  The Pirates have a high asking price for Reynolds, as he was rumored to be dealt at the deadline, but no deal was completed.  The Yankees are said to be rumored as a destination for Reynolds.

The Pirates 2023 season is still very far away.  A lot more news will be coming from the organization in the coming days.
